At Home Run Reef you can experience some strong currents depending on the tide. Usually dives are one way along the reef slope depending on the current's direction. There is a small bay to the south that is sheltered from the current. That is a good place to start from, especially for beginners.
The topography is sloping hard coral reef which goes on down to 15m-20m where it meets the sand. The sand then slopes gradually off away from the island.
To the South East of the northern corner of the bay is The Andaman Explorer wreck lying in the sand. It was a small dive vessel that was purposefully sunk for divers. It is lying about 40m from the reef at 22m. All decks have now collapsed and it sits no more than about a meter off the sand. It is a habitat for less common species like catfish and honeycomb morays. Shoals of glassfish is commonly seen.
There are no god landmarks for locating the wreck. Therefor it is best to start the dive on the south side, if the current allows, to have a better chance of finding it. With good visibility the outline of the reef at the bay's corner can be distinguished from the wreck. Failing that a short swim on a bearing of around 315° is enough to get there.
Located at the east most tip of Racha Yai. 13 nautical miles south of Ao Chalong.
Home Run Reef is also known as Homerun reef.
