Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Airplane Wreck

Airplane Wreck (and Wet Suit City at the next site) are well worth the drive. You'll travel through some very scenic countryside and eventually land at the Sunset Waters Beach Resort (formerly the Coral Cliff Resort). The beach is for their guests, but you'll be welcome to pass through for the dive. They also have a dive shop at the end of the road by their beach. Drop by to say hi, and to let them know you'll be diving in the area. Northwest of Willemstad, travel 12.3 km West on Weg Naar Westpunt from the Weg Naar Hato intersection to San Pedro. Turn left to head toward Soto. Travel 8.3 km to reach the intersection in Soto shown on below.

We stayed for 10 days at Sunset Waters, and went for over a dozen shore dives through the lagoon to give us some variety from the boat dives (which were very good). The reef at the wreck and to the south ("Wet Suit City") is in great shape. We never experienced significant currents, and the visibility, except for one day after a heavy rain, was Cayman-like. Take a camera and look for bristleworms, lettuce leaf nudibranchs and arrow crabs. We routinely encountered scorpionfish, so watch out where you put your hands! The entrance and exit through the sandy lagoon will spoil you. Don't waste your time diving north of the wreck toward the harbor--it's silted up.
